Profylakse´s lead product SAP (serum amyloid P component) is a recombinant, stable human serum protein, which in preclinical studies has documented a broad antiviral effect on influenza and parainfluenza virus infections. SAP binds to the haemagglutinin of influenza virus thereby blocking its binding to epithelial cells in the respiratory tract. In this way the initial infection and spread of influenza virus is inhibited/blocked. Twenty-two different influenza A virus strains as well as influenza B virus and parainfluenza virus have shown to be inhibited by SAP.
